You Don’t Need To Be A Technical Expert For Your Project

Do you really need to be a technical expert to develop a consumer product? I say you don’t.

Are you familiar with the 10.000 Hour Rule? The principle states that in order to become an expert on anything you need at least 10.000 hours of deliberate practice of that particular skill. Well, you don’t necessarily need to spend that much time to access that level of knowledge and expertise.

If you are developing physical products for yourself or for a client, you may have come across similar situations such as these:

Risking costly mistakes

You are completing the design of the product that you are working on and making it ready for manufacturing. You are somehow familiar with the manufacturing process required, but you are not completely certain that some critical areas of the design will work on that particular process. You are afraid that you can’t get a tailored answer just by looking at generic design guidelines or suggestions online. You are stuck and uncertain if your design will require major changes once delivered to manufacturers.

Limiting your work opportunities

Designing medical devices always require high understanding of certifications and industry regulations. This is your first time developing a medical product but the design itself is very similar to other products you have designed in the past so you are confident you can complete the technical design. However, you are not familiar with the exact certifications that have to be met, which is an essential requirement for the project. You decide not to continue with that project as you can’t afford to hire a part-time specialist and don’t feel confident finding reliable information out there.

Slowing down your innovation

During the initial concept design of your product, you were exploring different alternative materials to use for a very specific functional component, that from your own research, was a completely new application. Since you didn’t have the technical knowledge or didn’t know where to look for it, you were decided to learn all you can about the materials and the new application. Up to now you have spent over 12 months researching, getting different material samples and performing endless experiments still with no significant results. Then, you stumble upon a Kickstarter project that is essentially offering the exact application that you are trying to develop. Unfortunately, the opportunity to arrive first to market with a new innovation and the corresponding media exposure is lost.

From the examples above you can realize that you don’t need to be an expert 100% of the time, you probably only need to know about a particular skill or knowledge on specific situations that you might never require again. So, I would rather recommend that you “become an expert” just when you need it.

How to do that?

Simple. Find someone that is in fact an expert on what you are looking for. Now, you might be thinking,

“Oh yeah, that’s obvious, nothing that I didn’t know already…but hiring a technical expert is expensive, time consuming and I don’t even know where to find one that would be available to work on my small project”

You are absolutely right. That is exactly what I came to realize as well. I have been in that situation myself where I just needed a quick consultation to know if I was in the right direction with the work I was doing for my client. I didn’t want to hire an expert or specialist or spend hours looking for a vague answer online, that’s not what I needed to get my job done right.
