Elon Musk’s Neuralink Product Demo Was Meant For You

Let’s all stop talking about the pigs for a second because Neuralink’s widely watched 2020 product demo was meant for you.
Before I dive into the connection between Neuralink product demo and you, let’s me provide a quick introduction on both Neuralink and Elon Musk.
Neuralink is a neurotechnology company where the development of implantable brain-computer interfaces in the form of chips is taking place.
The company was founded in 2016.
In 2019 Neuralink invited the world to observe it’s goals, progress and aspirations. Influential individuals founded Neuralink, and amongst them is the globally known Elon Musk.
Elon Musk is an individual that needs little to no introduction, but for the sake of completeness, here is a quick background.
Elon was born in South Africa and is a citizen in both Canada and the United States. He also just recently became a centi-billionaire (net worth $100 billion+).
Why do I think Neuralink’s 2020 product demo was meant for you.
Well, Elon’s says it is.
“The primary purpose of this demo is actually recruiting”
Ten seconds into his appearance at the opening of the demo, Elon lets viewers and attendees understand that the demo aims to get some talent into the Neuralink team.
Apart from the apparent recruitment purpose, other factors within the demo were also meant for you.
Segments of the demo included discussion on vision, future of disability, inclusion, entrepreneurship etc.
In this article, I’ll break down segments of the product demo I believe could provide you with some form of value, either inspirational or simply just informational.
Neuralink is inviting talented individuals to come and join the team working on developing a life-changing technology.
Neuralink team currently consists of Neuroscientists, Software Scientists, Mechanical Engineers, Chip Designers, Roboticists, Electrical Engineers, Veterinarians etc.
Individuals that have worked on edge devices such as smartphones, smartwatches, mobile devices or robots, are the target candidates for roles at Neuralink.
Elon specifies that having prior experience with working in brain-related roles is not a requirement and that it’s entirely possible to learn on the job.
The current recruitment effort is aimed at bringing the Neuralink implant device to market, and there is an aim to make the implanted chip affordable, reliable and commercial.

You could have a glimmer of hope for medical technology when watching the product demo.
The overall goal of Neuralink is aspirational as they aim to solve a cluster of neurobiological disorders.

Neurobiological diseases affect the brain, spinal cord and general nervous systems in the human body. Elon states in the Neuralink demo that if your life span is long enough, you could at some point encounter some form of a neurobiological disorder.
Common examples of neurobiological disorders and diseases are epilepsy, dementia, stroke, paralysis, blindness etc.
There are more numbers associated with neurological disorders, but the general information is that the amount of individuals affected is growing rapidly.
To some individuals, the work and efforts of the intelligent minds at Neuralink convey a promise of a future where these diseases are managed with a Neuralink’s implanted device.
Elon alludes to the fact that the Neuralink implanted chip device feels eerily similar to those on the dark sci-fi series Black Mirror.
It’s hard not to see the comparison between Neuralink device and the various technologies depicted in Black Mirror as we hear statements from the Neuralink team to the device possibility of storing and replaying memories, loading consciousness, head-up displays, enhanced vision etc.
There was even a joke made or what seemed like a joke that mentioned the potential of the Neuralink device able of summoning a Tesla vehicle telepathically.
The Neuralink device could also impact the future of gaming as members of the team speaks on a good functional target for the device is to observe if it can be used by humans to play StarCraft.

Inspiration and Inclusion
The Neuralink team shown on the question panel during the product demo has a couple of females and a person of colour.
Seeing a person of colour, Felix Deku(Director of Microfabrication), on the Neuralink question panel, reinforced the thought that the roles available at Neuralink are based on intellectual qualities a person possesses.
It is nothing less than inspiring seeing the coming together of great minds (and pigs) coming together to develop technology that can influence every aspect of daily life for billions of people.
Neuralink was simply an idea five years ago, and became a company in 2016, in 2019 they showed the world a visible technology device. In 2020 they’ve progressed as far as to make the device unnoticeable on wearers and even received an FDA approval.
From listening to the individuals on the panel, it is clear that each team member is passionate about their role and each of their contributions is just as important as the next.
Neuralink 2020 progress update lived up and surpassed expectations. I’m currently looking forward to the 2021 update, and I’m expecting the Neuralink team to push the boundaries of our imagination once again.
