Getting Your First 10K Followers
The 3 simple steps
I hit 10,000 followers on Medium a few years back. I have since advised influencers, content teams, and businesses on how to grow a following online.
Before we go further, I should warn you — you shouldn’t take growing a following on any social media platform as a way to attain business success. Yes, it brings brand awareness and can lead to opportunities. However, only think of this as a necessity in the overall brand establishment.
A large following alone won’t do much for you. In fact, accept that it won’t do anything for you. But with it, all the other things you want to do will be easier.
Also, the platform you decide to focus on matters. Always remember that the followers are owned by the platform they are on. For example, just because someone is following you on Instagram doesn’t mean they want to follow you on X (formerly Twitter).
A large following means one thing only — people want to associate with you. Part of them are your fans. Part of them are haters. Part of them are onlookers. Part of them are bots. Part of them are spectators. Some of them don’t even know why they follow you. Part of them are casual supporters. Every one of them is living in their own world.
