Git Is Freaking Awesome

Git is integral to being a developer in the modern age. I find it strange that it hasn’t migrated into the mainstream. It almost solely lies in the domain of software development, and in my opinion, it shouldn’t.

A Brief History

Git was first released in 2005 by Linus Torvalds, the main guy behind the Linux operating system. It’s considered a 3rd generation version control system, succeeding Subversion as the top dog. Since then, it has become the dominant force.

According to Openhub, git is the version control software of choice for 71% of projects.

Git market share

Github, Gitlab and Bitbucket are all large companies built on top of the open-source codebase that is Git. They are platforms that developers, the world over, have intimate working relationships with.

If Git is so powerful in enabling progress and innovation in software, why isn’t it anywhere else?
