Think about the last time you were in a movie theatre watching a thrilling movie. The film is playing, the lights are down, the speakers are loud and you are fully engrossed in the contents of the film: the characters, the drama, and the conflict. You are so immersed that you might even forget that you aren’t a part of the story; that you’re actually just sitting in a movie theatre watching, observing this story from afar. The theatre does a great job captivating you, causing you to lose awareness of your surroundings for hours at a time. This is very much how our consciousness works. We tend to get absorbed in our inner shows.

When you are watching a movie, you get drawn in because the contents of the screen are all you see and the speakers all you hear. They cause you to forget that you are actually sitting in a theatre just witnessing the course of the film. Michael Singer in his book Untethered Soul equates this person sitting in the movie theatre to our true selves. You are the one that sees everything, that is aware of the thoughts and emotions that are being shown on your ‘movie screen.’ Spirituality is the ability to separate yourself from the contents of the movie and to become aware of your seat in that movie theatre.

If you’re actually watching a movie and someone coughs or checks their phone, you might naturally be reminded of your separation…
