How I Convinced Myself to Stop Worrying About ChatGPT and Embrace Our New A.I. Overlords

Sure, a machine apocalypse sounds scary, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be fun, too!

The “Singularity” — the supposed moment when technology growth becomes uncontrollable and overtakes humanity — was never something I personally worried about. While lots of people’s jobs and livelihoods seemed at obvious risk of being co-opted by machines, mine never did. For example, I’m not a truck driver, so automated vehicles aren’t going to replace me. And I’m not a factory worker, so robots aren’t going to take my job, either. Instead, I’m a software developer and entrepreneur. Machines can’t code themselves, right? Surely, technology isn’t going to wipe out my job.

Or rather, that’s what I thought.

Then came ChatGPT. ChatGPT’s ability to debug software and write rudimentary code suggests software developers everywhere (myself included) should start saying goodbye to their cushy, six-figure, Silicon Valley jobs within the next 10-ish years.

In short, apparently I’m as screwed as everyone else, and that sucks.

However, as I was inhaling a pint of Ben & Jerry’s, binge watching The Last of Us, and mourning the demise of my purpose on this planet, I had…
