When I first started writing, I did it because of the thousands of lives my stories gave me. The friends, the adventures, I was constantly seeking them, into books, into words, into other people’s eyes.
Writing gave me the freedom to express myself in ways that I’m so lucky I can do, It also gave me a home whenever I needed one, and a shoulder to cry on when I was lost and lonely and maybe a little too drunk.
I would wake up on Sunday morning and, laptop in hand, I would type whatever my heart whispered to me, and I loved it. I loved it because it was some sort of secret identity, a hidden place where I could live whenever life was just too much, whenever friends walked away and whenever Adele stopped singing and I had more tears to cry.
I didn’t know I could have started a career. I didn’t know I was slowly weaving a web of opportunities, a future where I could have lived happy thanks and with my own writing.
I also thought that the only way of making money writing was to become an author, a famous, respected author with a New York Times Bestseller series of books that the whole world read and a verified Twitter account.
I wrote a book. I wrote a book and never finished it and although the goal is still there, and plan A (publishing a book) is still happening, I found new ways to make my writing a proper job.
That happened when I discovered Medium.
Now, I’m not here to talk to you about the Partner Program because if you’re reading this, it means you’ve already signed up for it and trying to make a bit of cash. I’m here to tell you how I made my first 3$ on the platform with 2 followers and a lot of patience.
If you’re up for it and you’re interested in knowing how I did it, then grab a cuppa and let’s get to business.
1. YOU DON’T NEED TONS OF FOLLOWERS
I started on Medium with zero followers, as you do, and when I made some cash I had 2 followers in total. One of these was a friend of mine. So don’t wait until you have a decent amount of followers to start writing, it doesn’t matter. I still only have 7 followers and I am making money so less worrying about the followers, more writing.
2. YOU DON’T NEED TO JOIN PUBLICATIONS
I feel like everyone on Medium tells you to write under some big publication to have more reach. That is very true if you’re planning on making lots of money which is appealing but you won’t make it as you first start. By saying that, I don’t mean you don’t have to follow or write for publications, you totally should! I myself write for publications and it’s incredible because it gives me the opportunity to be seen by other people and when it comes to writing, exposure it’s key. What I’m telling you is that even if I joined a publication, I made my first money with an article that I didn’t submit to any of those and made me the most money. How? Just keep on reading to find out.
3. POST IT EVERYWHERE
And when I say everywhere, I mean EVERYWHERE. When I checked my stats, I found out that more than half of the views have been from external links and not form Medium readers. You know why? Because I posted my articles on Twitter and Instagram (both on feed and stories!) and even though I don’t have a huge following on those platforms, people still read my tweets and saw my stories and read the articles. They clapped and read and retweeted and that’s what basically helped me made my first few dollars. So if you have a platform like Twitter or Instagram (or both!) use them to your advantage, share your stories with the people who follow you and you will definitely see higher engagement in a few days.
It was amazing to see how I could grow from there, I’m constantly looking for tips and tricks and I’m learning as I go, like you are. But it’s so easy to make money on Medium, you just need to write an article, preferably well written and with a point, and share it everywhere. Use every platform you would normally use and see your views growing, it’s that simple, believe me!
