How to Create a Side Hustle Out of Your Dreams
And 3 Commitments to Make It Happen
Everyone has dreams they wish they could see happen. Whether it is to start your own business. Build your own house. Write a book. Or Travel around the world, we all have dreams. But how do we turn them into a reality? What do we need to do in order to make them actually happen?
I have experienced this over and over in my life. I have a dream, but how do I make it happen? Chasing your dreams is like a side hustle to the rest of your life at first, and then it becomes much more.
What do I mean a side hustle?
The best definition I have come across comes from the author of the best selling book, Side Hustle:
A side hustle is not a part-time job. A side hustle is not the gig economy. It is an asset that works for you. — Chris Guillebeau
By this definition, if a side hustle is an asset, then we need to build into our dreams by building it up as a side hustle. When we create direction for our dreams and take action, we begin a side hustle journey toward our dreams.
How Do We Start Side Hustling Our Dreams?
Our dreams can be very complex or fairly simple, however, they are things we want or wish to do. And for one reason or another we don’t start chasing those dreams, we simply say, “someday I will…”
It is in these conversations with ourselves and our friends and family that we begin to feel a tug at our souls to chase our dreams. We begin to go from WANTING to do something to NEEDING to do something about our dreams.
I remember almost two years ago to the day, I decided early one morning to start blogging again. After receiving encouragement from a mentor, reading some impactful books, and doing some soul searching I realized I needed to return to a dream and chase it.
For a long time, I had plenty of excuses as to why I couldn’t do it. I believed all those lies and they kept me from doing anything. There were plenty of reasons why I shouldn’t chase this dream. And yet, there are plenty of reasons why I should.
The first step to turning your dreams into a side hustle is choosing the reasons why you should do it over the reasons why you shouldn’t do it.
Why should you side hustle your dream?
Take that ‘why’ and write it on a note card to carry with you everywhere you go. Because this ‘why’ will help you as you create direction and take action. The next important step is to commit to creating direction and taking action.
3 Commitments We Need to Create Direction for Our Side Hustle
There are a lot of ways to chase your dreams. However, when it comes to turning your dreams into a side hustle, we need to do three things. These three things are commitments to seeing our dreams come true and actually working on our side hustle.
Commitment #1: Schedule Time to Work on Your Side Hustle
“If it doesn’t get scheduled, it doesn’t get done.”— Peter Drucker, Author of The Effective Executive
This will be true of your dreams, your side hustle, and anything else which is a priority in your life. If you don’t schedule the work you need to do for your side hustle, it will not happen.
There are plenty of other activities and events in our life to keep us from our dreams. And there are plenty of other people who will schedule our day for us if we don’t do it.
So, we need to commit to a schedule of time to work on our side hustle.
Commitment #2: Plan Out Your First 10 Actions
“If you don’t know where you are going, you’ll end up someplace else.” — Yogi Berra, Major League Baseball Great
We cannot turn our dreams into a side hustle without planning out our actions. In the last two years, I have learned time and again, the only way to take effective action toward accomplishing our goals or seeing our dreams come true is by creating direction.
And the best way to do this isn’t with a highly organized system, it is by simply mapping out your first ten actions. If you can commit to identifying those first ten actions, you can start taking action immediately and turn your dreams into the side hustle which will make them come true.
Commitment #3: Work on Your Side Hustle, Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
“Being a prolific writer requires a lunchpail and steel-toed boots kind of attitude.” — Ayodeji Awosika
To be honest, to be prolific at anything, you need to have a hard-working kind of attitude. When we really want to turn a dream into a side hustle and see it come true, we need to prepare ourselves to roll up our sleeves and do the hard work.
Day after day, rain or shine, sickness or health. We need to commit to doing the work.
Some days it will be easy to put the time in and see something come of all that work. And other days, it will be incredibly difficult to do any kind of work, but we need to get off the couch and start moving. When we do this, we are side hustling our dreams.
Now, Is The Time to Act
Maybe, you have been on the fence about chasing your dreams. Or you have been going down a particular career path and focus, but you can feel it in your gut that it isn’t what you truly want.
Now is the time to act.
Sometimes, we have been doing something for so long, living in a personal status quo, that we are afraid to make changes in our lives, but we cannot keep doing this to ourselves.
Now is the time to act.
For the rest of us, who are chasing our dreams as a hobby, is it time to turn pro? Are you tired of simply doing this for fun or half-heartedly chasing your dreams?
Now is the time to act.
Today, you can commit to the three ways to turn your dreams into a side hustle. And then, you can go to the hard work of seeing your dreams come true. I believe in you. Do you?
