How to explore your real potential by testing your limits
Know your limits. And then exceed them.
We all think that we know our limits. We know what we’re good at and we work towards improving ourselves in the set direction. We set goals that will bring us closer to our definition of success, or else, the end journey.
What happens though when you reach at some point your idea of success? What’s your next step?
What if you’ve tested your limits even beyond reaching the dead end to explore different paths?
You don’t know your limits. Not before you push yourself to them.
It’s all in your head
Everything starts with your mindset. You are what you think. That’s why we are all responsible for limiting ourselves to what we can imagine as a definition of success. Or even worse, we are limiting ourselves to what it’s easier to be achieved. This way, we still feel successful and enjoy the benefits of it.
The real change occurs though when we dare to dream of more.
“The size of your dreams must always exceed your current capacity to achieve them. If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough. If you start off with a small dream, you may not have much left when it is fulfilled because along the way, life will task your dreams and make demands on you.” — Ellen Johnson Sirleaf
Your dreams should scare you. But they shouldn’t deter you from turning them into action.
Bigger goals may be scary, but who said you can’t chunk them into smaller actionable steps?
How about you start working towards a bigger goal day by day?
Make the testing of your limits effortless
If you want to grow as a person at a personal and professional level, it’s time to embrace the art of testing your limits.
The more you say “I can’t do that”, the more you’ll believe this.
That’s when the shift of the mindset should occur to explore our growth.
Make it effortless.
It’s common when hearing a new crazy idea to react like this:
“This is insane. I don’t think I can do this.”
From now on, when you’re thinking of a new crazy idea, change your reaction into something like this:
“I don’t know if it’s possible, but I’m willing to test it.”
or even better:
“What a crazy idea! Let’s work towards making it happen.”
It’s all about leaving aside the negativity and the mental limitations that keep you back.
The more you think of your limits, the more you’re restricting yourself from the unknown and what it may bring.
Of course, not everything will work out, but it’s still important to adopt a more positive, ambitious and strategic mindset that will make you more open to new ideas.
Embrace your passion, leave aside any limitations
The changing mindset shouldn’t push you to the edge of a cliff. It should make you more passionate about what you love.
When you’re passionate about something, it should be instinctive to explore how far you can go with it.
If you’re running your own business and you really believe in it, then you need to use this passion to break the chains of all the existing limitations.
Work towards what you enjoy most. Then you won’t feel the need to get away from it.
And this doesn’t even mean that you need to work harder. You only need to work smarter, starting by broadening your thinking and how you can exceed your potential.
Don’t push your limits for the sake of the challenge
The idea isn’t to push yourself towards all kinds of limits simply to prove that you’re not afraid to exceed them.
What’s more important is to understand that there needs to be a balance between an unfulfilled dream and a goal that’s way too simple.
Test the limits that can bring you closer to your passion.
- Analyse all the restrictive limits that you’ve already set and find the best way to exceed them.
Don’t see your limits as a challenge that you need to overcome, but rather as an opportunity for further growth.
Turn your growth into a routine
It’s not enough to test your limits if you don’t make the most of this process.
Start embracing the idea of growth and what this means in your definition of personal success.
- Break down your goals into smaller steps and involve them in your daily routine.
Instead of being afraid of a big large step, split it into smaller yet important signs of progress.
The more you realise you’re growing, the more exciting it will be to prove yourself wrong about your set limits.
It’s a liberating process that never stops and that’s the beauty of it.
Keep asking, “What’s next?”
One of the hardest parts of the journey is to maintain your passion and thirst for knowledge.
There are many reasons for your excitement to fade away along the way. The easiest trap is to reach the point that you had defined as your idea of success.
If you’re willing to keep testing your limits though, there’s no end goal, only bigger steps.
Not in a workaholic, hustling mode, that will exhaust you. But in a genuinely passionate life that keeps you interested in the next chapter of your creative path.
Turn it into a habit.
Every time you’re achieving something that you’re proud of, spend a moment to enjoy its success and ask yourself: “What’s next?”
It won’t be easy to follow this endless journey every time. The moments of reflection will be crucial and the distractions will always be around.
All you need is to remind yourself that your only end goal is to work towards what you’re enjoying the most.
If you master this mindset, then it won’t be a problem anymore to explore how to push your limits.
In fact, there won’t be any limits to restrict your growth.
