How to Get Paid to Write: Just Start
Even if you don’t have experience yet
About a zillion lifetimes ago, I started a blog where I interviewed writers about how they had made their way to the accomplishment of earning a living from their writing.
It was my way of being productive while trying to figure out what kind of writing job suited me best.
Soon afterward I scored my first client, who became a good friend. He had the idea to turn my blog concept into a series of video interviews.
We created WriterViews and interviewed authors like Charlaine Harris, Ramit Sethi and Jamie Reidy. We recorded two interviews a day and kept up with it for about six months, but life got in the way before we could monetize our ideas (the site was eventually removed).
Throughout the project we interacted with all kinds of writers — newspaper journalists, magazine columnists, web content creators, script writers, childrens book authors, biographers, how-to experts and novelists.
They wrote in different styles, with various audiences, motivations and processes; their goals and daily schedules looked almost nothing alike. Yet when asked for advice, almost every one of these experts had one tip in common: Just start.
