How to Pitch Your Stories to Major Newspapers & Magazines

There’s a formula.

In the past month, I’ve gotten responses from: The LA Times, The New York Times, British Vogue, New York Magazine, and over a dozen more newspapers and magazines. After pitching for a few days straight, I am now signing on as a contractor for the Huffington Post, getting an article published by USA Today Opinion, and writing an article for Vogue. I am also a contributing writer New York Daily News, The Los Angeles Sentinel and Blavity. I quickly learned there is a formula to pitching, and I’d like to share it with you.

Demand Their Attention

The subject line of the email determines whether your pitch will even be considered at all. Demand the editor’s attention with your subject line. If you write “Article about Fashion” to a features editor at Vogue, the message will immediately be deleted. If you write “What Happened When I Fell on A Chanel Runway” the editor is more likely to open the email. Never lie in your subject line, but always add emphasis to your subject as much as possible. This is the opening to being considered. You don’t want to sound boring.

Use Connections

Before pitching, make a list of the people you know at newspapers and magazines. Ask anyone and everyone you know about…
