Back in 2010, I started working remotely one day a week as part of a new program at my employer. There were plenty of skeptics, so I had to figure out how to do my job just as well as — or even better than — when I was onsite.

Figuring this out wasn’t as straightforward as I thought it would be. But after some trial and error, I was able to hone my remote work processes and my overall productivity — and well-being — improved. Fast forward a couple of years and I was teleworking twice a week. By 2015, I was working remotely full-time for that same company.

As technology continues to evolve and change our workplaces and homes, remote work is becoming more common. A Gallup survey found that in 2016, 43% of Americans worked remotely at least part of the time, a 4% increase from 2012. And Global Workplace Analytics found that in 2017, 40% more U.S. employers offered flexible work arrangements than in 2012.
