“Our chief want in life is somebody who will make us do what we can.” — Ralph Waldo Emerson

I have had — and will continue to have — many mentors in my life. I often quote them to the chagrin of the people around me and annoy the heck out of my wife.

In the past, I got carried away by what I saw, at the moment, and never took a step back to understand.

This changed in 2011 after Steve Jobs left us, and I started reading biographies, watching interviews, etc.

There’s something about dissecting our heroes that provides a map we can either use powerfully or decline intentionally.

We see today’s success without considering yesterday’s struggle.

We see today’s wins and ignore yesterday’s losses.

“You know, you do need mentors, but in the end, you really just need to believe in yourself.” — Diana Ross
