Whenever I’m working on anything, I have a tendency to let my instant gratification monkey take full control. A few hours later, I’m left wondering where my time went, and why I didn’t make any progress.

This is a universal experience, and deadlines are my solution.

What is an instant gratification monkey?

Tim Urban defines the instant gratification monkey in his excellent TED talk on procrastination (skip ahead to 3:50 to get to the punchline).

As Tim defines so well, the instant gratification monkey loves to wrest control from the rational decision maker part of our brains.
