What would happen if the earth started spinning the other way?

As winter coats the earth in blankets of snow, slowly giving way to spring, then summer, and eventually autumn — during which the earth undergoes drastic transformations — due to its anticlockwise rotation, there arises a frightening possibility, one that has become a reality for Venus.

What if our earth started spinning from east to west, instead of west to east?

When scientists discovered that Venus had slowly reversed its rotation, there was a hailstorm of contradicting headlines flying across newspapers and websites. While some theories suggested Venus didn’t actually reverse directions but simply flipped upside down (making it appear as though it was spinning the other way), others debated that it had, indeed, changed its direction.

But not to worry. Unless a huge meteorite crashed into the earth and completely messed up its orbit, the earth is not likely to spontaneously change directions — as far as science can predict. Various religious texts — like the Holy Qur’an in Islam — describe in detail a day when the sun rises from the west instead of the east, all of which corresponds to what scientists predict would be the aftermath of such a cataclysmic event.
