Life is complicated. Most of us are obsessed with finding simplifications. We dig for ways to curb the challenges of an inherently complex existence. In a recent discussion with my wife, we discovered a new paradigm that has changed my life. I hope it changes yours.
Many of us are unhappy with our current jobs or careers and I’m no different. I need a change, but what do I want? We went back to the beginning and talked about the various jobs I’ve had in the past. We tried to break down why I loved some and why the opposite has been true of everything else. I realized I have only ever loved two jobs.
I was once a guidance counselor/big brother/unlicensed therapist/corrections officer at a youth care facility. My title was “tech” but I wore a many different hats throughout each day. The facility was a last-chance group home for wards of the state. If they “graduated” our program, they were placed in foster care. If they failed the program, they were incarcerated in juvenile detention.
The boys were of various ages between 8 and 18-years-old. Some were violent. Others were substance abusers. Most had broken relationships with whatever family they had left. Sometimes the boys needed to be physically restrained. Other times, they…
