Instagram vs Reality & The Depth of Our Insecurities

Last week, social media giant Instagram announced it will remove filters that mimic the effects of plastic surgery after an upswing in cases of body dysmorphia among people who use smartphone apps to alter their features. Instagram and many of its competitors allow users to customize their images with a rotating collection of masks ranging from holiday-themed overlays to animal ears and noses.

Aside from these obvious modifications, the platforms offer “subtle” filters to tweak what many people consider flaws: blemishes, yellowing teeth…
