Monmouth’s first modern architecture grew around abandoned brewery

MONMOUTH, Ill. — Microbreweries are increasingly being welcomed in small towns for their contributions to the local economy. That had been the case in Monmouth as early as 1866, when two German brothers — Frank and John Fowler — purchased a former flour mill at the base of a hill on the north side of town and converted it to a brewery.
