The dream you have before becoming an online writer is to create enough extra income to replace your 9–5.

When I was 27 and had just lost my job due to a freak electrical fire, I decided I was going to start writing online. I decided I was going to write online for 30 days — no exceptions. I would wake up, go to the gym, search for new jobs to apply to, and spend the next several hours writing. It didn’t matter what I wrote, as long as I put together a draft and pressed “publish.”

A 30-day commitment turned into 60.

The more I wrote, the more I found new opportunities. First, I found Quora, the question/answer-based platform with 300 million unique monthly users. Next, I found Medium — the blogging site that pays you for your work. Within my first two months of writing, I generated over 3 million views.

And didn’t make a single cent.

It took me over a year writing online to make my first sale. It took another full year to make my second. In my third, I built 3 income streams making enough income to replace my full-time job.
