Situated in a limestone sinkhole, the radio telescope at Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observatory is 1,000 feet in diameter and 167 feet deep. Covering almost 20 acres it is actually only the second-largest telescope in the world. (China’s FAST dish is the largest, the size of 30 football fields.)¹
