It is cumbersome to live as if normalcy lies beyond whatever resistance we are facing at any given moment, but that is how many of us approach our lives.

We believe that once we get through this rough financial patch, things will be peaceful. We live with the expectation that once we get a better job, we’ll feel fulfilled. We think that once our kids are a certain age, things will be easier. We feel like once we develop good meditation and gratitude practices, we’ll finally experience happiness.

We tend to view our life as being one horizon away from the land of milk and honey. But when that land continues to evade us year after year, decade after decade; we become bitter, cynical, frustrated, and jaded. The ever-present resistance can feel overwhelming. It can feel like we have somehow failed in our journey.

This doesn’t have to be our story, though. We just have to change our relationship with resistance.

It starts with learning to welcome it.
