This was adapted from a letter to an environmentalist friend. The question was: Given that climate change is an immediate existential threat and the humanitarian problems around the globe, how can we justify spending on space exploration and research?

My generation’s primary concern is that the climate emergency may destroy civilization within our lifetimes.
