I’ve lost count of the number of times that people have either told me or I’ve read online, that quitting your 9-to-5 is the answer.

It’s funny, I very nearly quit my 9-to-5, and I’ll tell you that story in two seconds. But first I just want to say that if you’re on the verge of quitting and think that starting something for yourself is the answer, there are a whole load of great things about working 9–to-5. So don’t quit yet, read this first.

But let’s start with that story.

My working life

Eight years ago I finished university and started work as a graduate in a huge company.

Overwhelmed, daunted, and full of self-doubt, I entered the work of work. I remember those early days. I had no idea what I was doing, who I was, and what I wanted to do with my life. I was like a little baby lamb.

I stumbled through those first years. Questioning everything. Trying to understand my role, where I fit, what people wanted from me, and how I could impress. My expectations of the world of work were completely out of whack and I was getting brought back down to earth every day.

Slowly, I became miserable.

I very nearly quit
