Run Faster Than Your Fears
You wake up as a clean state. But like most people, as you’re waking up you start scanning your mind for something negative to attach to — a situation from yesterday with a friend, an interaction with your boss, your bank account balance.
It’s called dosing.
Just as you would dose yourself with medicine and have a reaction, your brain doses itself with negative thoughts. This brings you to a dubious state of negativity, which leads to a downward spiral.
The opposite is true as well. You can dose yourself with positive thoughts and potential and set yourself up to feel powerful and aligned.
Why Would We Dose Ourselves with Negativity?
Familiarity. Addiction to struggle. Lack of awareness. Feeling connected to our friends and family who are also feeling stuck.
Part of you wants change but another part of you likes to stay in this negative emotional location. You are skilled at what to do in this negative spiral and you’re addicted to the struggle of it all. It’s so damned familiar.
Even though you say you hate it and want to change, staying there is, in a way, comfortable because you know your demons. You know the stories, you know the fears and you know the plot line of wanting to change your situation, but you are never quite able to do that.
There’s something strangely comforting about laying there feeling terrible. It’s so familiar, and we are creatures of habit. But it does not get you the results you say you want.
How Do We Stop Dosing Ourselves?
The trick for me is to move faster than the voices. Outrun my fears.
Note: This is not a spiritual bypass. Outrunning your fears only works when you are intimate with your darkness and have made friends with your demons. It works when you have a solid set of practices and tools to keep you internally solid for the inevitable ups and downs of life.
The qualities needed to choose power over dosing yourself with negativity are:
This is always the first step. To change anything you must be conscious of your behaviors. Without awareness, nothing in your world can shift. If you don’t have awareness and want to build it, start meditating 20 minutes a day to build a connection to your Inner Observer.
Do you recognize when you are laying in bed in the morning dosing yourself with negative thoughts that keep you stuck and small? Or sitting at your desk, stuck in a moment of feeling terrible and you are telling yourself negative stories about yourself that make you feel worse?
In every moment, we choose. We choose our thoughts, we choose our reactions to conversations, we choose what to focus our attention on. Whether you are tuned in to that or not, you are still always choosing.
Once you are aware that you are dosing yourself with negative thoughts, you can start to powerfully choose a different course of action.
Choosing can be a very small action or something much bigger. The seemingly smallest of choices can have a huge impact on your day. Small choices build up over time and create bigger shifts in your life.
Five Powerful Choices To Help You Outrun Your Fears
1.Refocus your attention. Notice when you are stuck in a spiral. Go back to the task at hand, or choose another task, and stop daydreaming about all the ways you are a loser or don’t have what you want in life.
2. Do something intentional to begin your day. Practice yoga, go on a walk, listen to a mindfulness meditation, call a friend who will listen and tell you the truth, make your favorite healthy breakfast, drink water. Build this up over time to strengthen your inner self.
3. Listen to your intuition. When you hear the whisper of an idea, go with it. That idea is your aligned powerful clear voice trying to poke its way out and get your attention. Put your attention on that idea. Your intuition is the voice of your Higher Power speaking to you showing you what is possible. (That’s how this article was written.)
4. Listen to your body. Our brains get tired and we need movement in order to stay joyful, productive and clear. Notice when your body is asking for a walk, a dance break or some stretching. Do that! Even 30 seconds of movement goes a long way.
5. Go outside. Get some sunshine, even if it’s cold or raining. Be in nature, talk to people, notice the birds and insects, walk to get a cup of coffee and stretch your magnificent legs. Take breaths of fresh air into your lungs. Going outside gives you a new fresh perspective.
Becoming aware and choosing your thoughts and actions is a practice. Meaning, it’s not about getting it perfect. Just because you rocked it one day does not mean it will go so great another day. Sometimes we fall out of the yoga pose, and that is our yoga.
Shifting our consciousness starts with staying on the mat, staying in the game, staying ahead of our fears and negativity. If we let them, our thoughts have the power to take over our lives like an alien invasion. And maybe you need to do that enough times until you say, ENOUGH! And in that moment, you always have the power to choose something different.
How wonderful and empowering is that?
You are the Master of Your Life
Everything you do is a choice. Every word, every food you put in your body, every dollar you make or don’t make, every joyful or miserable situation you find yourself in.
When you recognize that you are the one creating your life, you will need to look at your choices straight in the eyes. That can be daunting, because you may not have the results you wish you had. So it becomes easier to blame others and be in victim consciousness. But if you do that, you are averting your power and choosing to stay stuck. And that is okay, but know that you are choosing that too.
Please have compassion for yourself. You are a human and have quirks, an ego that likes to keep you the same, a heart that gets broken, feelings that get hurt and a little child inside you who gets scared.
Can you be kind and gentle to yourself knowing all of this is inside you? Can you love yourself, knowing you are on a human journey doing the best you can do each day? Can you remember that you have the power to make a different choice tomorrow if today’s choice didn’t feel so good?
And can you please know that things will come up that are ready to be healed. That might be uncomfortable, but stick with it. If you are reading this, if you are aware, or working on your awareness, or working on making powerful choices, you are on the path to transformation. You are in the pose. You are doing the work. Celebrate that.
And with that practice, you are growing. It may seem small but even micro-inches add up. In fact, there’s no other way to create lasting change than one step at a time. And one step at a time becomes a journey of a lifetime.
Your lifetime, your journey. You are the Master of it.
