Perhaps you want to exercise to lose weight, meditate to maintain your mental wellbeing, or read daily to accumulate knowledge. Whatever habit we want to start, the worst thing we can do is to jump right into it without a game plan. This is one of those few moments where “Just Do It” should be put on hold for a second (sorry, Nike 🙏).

Building a habit is an intricate process that requires a complete rewiring of the way your mind works. I’ve simplified it into four critical steps:

  1. Get your mind right for success.
  2. Define it as specifically as you can.
  3. Track the progress for three weeks (this one is the most important).
  4. Review it — this is either the beginning or the end.

I’m not some self-growth guru, but LORD did I help myself grow. This is from my own experience of starting and maintaining 14 habits over the past year — it’s by no means a be-all and end-all, but it is what worked for me through one year of experimenting, documenting, improving, and refining. Now, let’s see if it works for you too.

STEP 1: Get Your Mind Right
