Combine a few tricks in one project by applying lessons in Sidetable for statistics and Datawrapper to design and deploy a custom choropleth map visualization in a medium blog.

On a Friday, I decided to start a new project that would require an application of statistical analysis to a dataset and then a visualization of that data on a map. Further, I wanted to deploy an interactive visual directly in a medium.com blog — I wanted something better than a static map, gif of a map, or a link to an external site.

The next day on Saturday, I learned how to use Datawrapper to embed a viz on Medium and on the following Tuesday, I found out about Pandas Sidetable thanks to this awesome story. The universe works in mysterious ways.

In this story, Ill share a few tips on applying Sidetable to a real-life project and deploying analysis in an interactive map with Datawrapper.

Trigger Warning — The dataset that I explore in this project contains reporting about crimes. The crime data are labeled with a one word descriptor such as ARSON or MOTOR VEHICLE THEFT — more violent crimes are described.
