The Popup Ad That Made Me (Almost) Spend My Hard-earned Money Without Thinking
I feel conflicted sharing this.
I don’t see myself as impulsive when it comes to spending money. But that I nearly acted that way showed that kickass marketing can get us to act out of character.
Here’s what happened:
I am a low-key crypto guy. I buy. I sell. I HODL, and I’m always on the lookout for the next Bitcoin.
A few days ago I got a popup notification from one of the crypto apps I use; the content went something like: “Buy this [inserst a crypto name] instantly to stay ahead of the curve….Make the move now…”
Crypto bros know that this is Altcoin season, and in such a season the next top performing token might just be lurking around somewhere.
So I clicked the popup. I followed through, and a few minutes down the line I was already typing digits before I knew it.
But somehow I had to pause.
“Why am I doing this?” I asked myself, “I’ve not even done my due diligence about this new token but here I am already punching numbers.”
I hesitated and didn’t go ahead, but the experience left me with two realizations:
- Human traits are strong and a great determinant of their actions
