If the model doesn’t work — change it

In 1914 Henry Ford got interested in productivity, he doubled workers wages and halved their working day. Why? He suspected he would see a massive spike in both motivation and productivity. He saw the model for the working day was broken and changed it.

Over a hundred years later we are still using his model for the working day.

Recently, there has a been a movement to re-evaluate Ford’s model. Hustle, outsourcing and hacking are now firmly part of the entrepreneurial paradigm that is proving ever more popular. As part of this, we have become obsessed with productivity, how to find it, and the complicated systems that promise to deliver it.
