“We just weren’t seeing eye to eye”

That’s what two separate founders told me when I caught up with them in the past 2 weeks. They had just gone through a break-up with their co-founders.

Both were B2B SaaS business.

While the context were different. I was struck by how similar the situations were. These were two separate Founders. They didn’t know each other. This means I was able to compare notes objectively.

To avoid confusion I’ll refer to them as:

  • Barry and Connor
  • Tina and Jasmine

And a bonus story of an impending break-up.

Let’s start…

Being a co-founder is like being married except with more focus on money.

Paul Graham from YC, once said:

“Several people [use] that word ‘married.’ It’s a far more intense relationship than you usually see between coworkers … This relationship has to be built of top quality materials and carefully maintained. It’s the basis of everything.”
