Science has made revolutionary progress in medicine and curing various conditions. Even the sense of hearing can be restored in many with cochlear implants. However for the blind, guide dogs and canes seem to be the standard technology for dealing with the impairment.

A lab in Stanford is currently working on a promising technology that may one day give the blind an implant capable of restoring vision. This lab is made up neuroscientists, circuit designers, and an eye doctor.

The head of the lab E.J. Chichilnisky, a professor of neurosurgery and ophthalmology, thinks he might have cracked the code to restoring sight.

In fact, he expects to have a retinal implant device built for use in animal trials within 5 years.

How The Eye Works

“The eye is a little outpost of the brain.”
