Mark Zuckerburg was mentored by Steve Jobs, Jack Dorsey was mentored by philanthropist Ray Chambers, Marc Benioff of Salesforce was mentored by Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, and Bill Gates and Paul Allen of Microsoft were mentored by PC inventor Ed Roberts.

For the past few months, I have been recruiting Europe’s most promising startup founders who are leveraging technology to build scalable solutions, addressing Europe’s most pressing challenges and connecting them to our mentors.

- ALDStone, Susana Nuria Guerrero Lopez, United Kingdom
Did you know that the construction industry produces 1.3 Billion ton of global waste which is expected to increase reaching 2.2 Billion tons every year by 2025?
The global flooring market is expected to reach €400 Billion by 2026. Currently, a very low percentage of materials used for construction is recycled or reused, with the rest being demolished, wasted or sent to landfill. This is not only economically, but environmentally unsustainable.
The UK Startup ALDStone integrated circular systems, allowing tiles of almost any material — including stone, ceramic and wood — to be removed and reused at other locations. This provides cost savings through reuse and sharing models, plus long-term protecting of economic and finite environmental resources. ALDStone reduces our resource extraction, pollution, waste and ultimately closes the loop. The ALDStone’s technology is not only successfully used in the office, but also in schools and has many residential applications. Susana Lopez, the founder of ALDStone expects to reach 100 new customers by 2019.
The projected future impact of ALDStone is the transformation of the built environment sector from linear to circular. This will provide a more sustainable economic model and more regenerative environmental protection, through less waste of natural resources and doing more with what we already have.
ALDSTONE EUTOP50 MENTOR: IRENE-MARIE SEELIG
Irene-Marie Seelig is a pioneer in circular, sustainable and next generation manufacturing innovation within consumer goods industry.
In 2017, Irene was awarded Forbes 30 Under 30 for “creating the products of tomorrow” through her start up which manufactures a vegan leather alternative made from mushrooms instead of animal skins. She has been a part of Plug and Play’s Fashion for Good accelerator along with winning the 2016 Kering Award for Sustainable Fashion Innovation for this development. In addition, Irene is the Innovation Development Manager at Swarovski, managing a 15M Euro product portfolio and leading a team of designers, material scientists and engineers from ideation to launch to commercialize new, innovative products for their B2B customers. Prior to her tenure at Swarovski, Irene worked across Global Marketing and Corporate Social Responsibility teams at Stella McCartney spearheading the development of product marketing strategies across all internal and external digital platforms.
2. Babyndex.eu, Zajzon Bodó, Hungary
Did you know that women can use a cheap reusable home Saliva Test to determine when they can get pregnant with a 98% accuracy ?
In OECD countries there are one million IVF treatment cycles every year. Nevertheless, most women use inaccurate body-temperature ovulation tests, because they are reusable or use expensive urine tests for accurate fertility monitoring. Zajzon Bodó co-founded Babyndex and developed a home Saliva Test, which is reusable and at the same time can also tell fertility — instead of solely the day of ovulation — by detecting small crystals in dried saliva. How? The user dries a drop of saliva and looks for crystals in a microscope. These crystals are however very hard to see. The Hungarian startup Babyndex has therefore come up with a solution by complementing the saliva test with computer vision. The user holds the microscope against her smart-phone, takes an image of the sample then uploads the image for analysis. The algorithm can detect crystals and the fertile days appear in a calendar, which the user can also show to her gynaecologist. What’s more, if crystals appear during missing menses, they sometimes indicate early-stage pregnancy. PCT patent application is pending.

3. Drone Hopper, Pablo Flores Peña , Spain
Did you know that drones can put off wildfires at night with a capacity of 600 liters?
On average 1500 square miles of the EU burns each year. Every year Europe struggles with wildfires in the summer, especially around the Mediterranean, where 66 people were killed in Portugal and Spain last year alone. These fires are extinguished through manned aerial firefighting, which takes place in hydroplanes and helicopters. Operations take place in extremely difficult circumstances where firefighters tirelessly try to control the fires from dusk to dawn as their work cannot be interrupted .
The Spanish startup Drone Hopper, has created a Wild Hopper platform allowing drones with 600 liter of water capacity run 24/7 operations. They are resistant to strong winds thanks to their state of the art proprietary stability system. They use heavy-duty semi-autonomous multirotor drones to create firewalls and lines of defence that protect communities and properties.
Since the drones are unmanned they dont put any human lives at risk. The use of patented water mist jet creation technology produces extremely accurate release, yielding an improved efficiency in terms of the area protected per volume released. In addition, reduced turn-around time of 15 minutes(local operation, use of thermal engines) and the possibility to operate several drones in collaborative mode (swarm operation) allow quick and powerful protection for wildfires with lower acquisition and ownership costs.
DRONE HOPPER EUTOP50 MENTOR: TOM CHARMAN
Tom Charman is the co-founder and CEO of KOMPAS, a data science startup focusing on leveraging data to provide spatial and interest insights using machine learning. Tom Charman is an experienced founder with a previous exit under his belt, which previously worked with technology companies focusing on understanding and analyzing their users.
In 2016, Tom gave a TEDx talk on Artificial Intelligence and the ‘Future of Technology’ and has been recognized as a leader in the industry, having spoken at events including Mobile World Congress, and Visa Futures. Tom also advises governments and institutions on the impact that data has on wider society, and was named the Future Face of Innovation and Technology by the Chamber of Commerce. Most recently, he was listed in the 30 south of 30 power list.
4. Bioseco, Michal Rybak, Poland
Did you know that by 2022, up to 5 million birds will die as a result of wind farms? Many of which are rare and endangered species.
The Global Wind Energy Council estimates that 840.000 MW of wind energy to be installed by 2022. This means approximately 2,5 to 5 million birds will die every year including rare and endangered species.
The Polish Startup Bioseco’s mission is to protect birds at wind farms, while helping wind farm owners better tackle the negative consequences of the harmful effects of their plants on avifauna.
Bioseco developed Multirejestrator — Bird Protection System, they have built innovative equipment for the automatic remote detection and collision avoidance, which has already been proven in several wind farms in Europe. Curious how? Check the video below:
The core team is composed of embedded, optical and IT engineers, who work together with ornithologists.
Based on their experience and know-how, Bioseco is also working on a system for bird collision avoidance at airports where ca. 40.000 birdstrikes are registered every year, which causes a risk to passengers life and costs approximately 2,3 Billion USD in financial losses.

Later on she’s joined a VC fund as an analyst, after which she became a member of the management board and the COO of one of the portfolio companies and is currently an investment manager at Hyperion VC. She is also a Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board at a company related to the cyber security sector.
7. KIT-AR, Manuel Oliveira, United Kingdom
Did you know that the skills gap in manufacturing is widening with 10 million jobs worldwide going unfilled?
There is a shift in the skills required in the manufacturing industry in response to advances in technology. As a result, the manufacturing industry is not meeting the demands of the globalised market catering to the ever increasing demand on product personalisation, whilst lacking the capability to handle the increased complexity of products and the associated manufacturing processes. Studies report that a US manufacturer is losing an average $3000 per existing employee due to shortage of skills and a further loss of $14,000 per unfilled position. These losses are similar in the EU and will only increase over the next 5–10 years.
The UK startup KIT-AR has created an industrial augmented reality solution that digitally enhances the worker on the shopfloor by providing them with the required knowledge when needed. The worker navigates a sequence of voice activated steps. Using patent-pending technology, KIT-AR analyses the data captured from the shopfloor worker’s actions to reason whether to trigger an intervention that can assist the worker or warn them of probable errors.
KIT-AR is a recent spin-off from two of the top European research institutions (Sintef and University College London) and an award winning game based learning company (HighSkillz) based on the results of the H2020 HUman MANufacturing (HUMAN) research project. The company is working with early adopters in aerospace, robot manufacturing and furniture manufacturing verticals. KIT-AR is currently seeking seed investment funding.
8. Laska Energy, Selcan Catal, Turkey
Did you know that each year, automobiles produce 1.5 Billion waste tires?
Each year there are 400 million wasted tires in Europe. The world is no longer able to sustain them and they contribute to natural disasters and harmful diseases. How to reduce that astonishing number is a challenge.
Laska Energy takes waste tires and processes them to get biofuels and use them to produce clean energy and extract valuable raw materials from tires in a safe and clean way, while preventing the environmentally harmful substance realease such as sulphur.
Laska Energy creates a huge potential climate impact by saving more CO2 than one million trees would consume- which is equivalent to 4000 hectares of forests, or 12 times the size of Central Park, 84 times the size of VondelPark, or 21 times the size of Hydepark.

Did you know that 2.9M people suffer from arthritis in Europe which severely impacts their strengths in their hands?
Millions of people suffer from lack of strength or pain in the hand. Problems with hand limitations are not just limited to arthritis but also strokes, ageing or demanding professional activities posing a huge negative impact in people’s lives.
Fortunately, the Portuguese startup Nuada is here to empower the weaker hands to be able to perform everyday tasks. Nuada is a smart and soft exoskeleton for the hand that looks like a regular glove. It is connected to a special bracelet that allows users to hold up to 40 kg’s of weight with their hands completely relaxed.
The sensors inside the glove allow detection of all of the user’s movements. Because of this, Nuada is able to provide a seamless interaction with the user, along with additional software services for both Healthcare and Industry applications.
Because of this new support system, workers can be assisted during demanding activities, preventing injury, to regain autonomy and reconnect with the world around them. Nuada is currently working with big automotive manufacturers and international recovery clinics and will expand pilots and pre-sales in 2019.

Monika Zochowska is the Co-founder and CEO at Phenicoptere Sp. Z o.o., a Warsaw based company with sales in over 60 countries.
Monika has created a disruptive product under the GLOV brand in the cosmetic industry that revolutionises everyday routine of removing makeup. The idea is to remove makeup only with water, simplifying the traditional makeup removing process. Did you know that more than 50% of drugs fail in development because the candidate drug substances cannot effectively be delivered to the site in the body where the drug should act?
To be active as drug, drug substances must effectively reach the site in the body where the drug substance acts to treat the disease. Previously Kamil was the CEO of Inteliclinic, a company that won LeWeb Paris startup competition for the best startup, and has been chosen as the best sleep startup by HealthXL. Inteliclinic has received the first prize for Neuroon as the most innovative product at SXSW in Austin, Texas.

The textile industry is one of the main sectors in the world, exporting more than 3 trillion dollars per year. The high production volumes are vehemently compromised by defective production. Like other sectors, it is mandatory to automatize processes, but quality control and inspection is still made by humans. This is a huge problem, especially because most of the defects are nearly invisible to the human eyes. Our vision and mission is that everything fossil-based can be made from lignin and that we will act as a catalyst to force this paradigm shift. A smooth transfer is made possible by our crude lignin oil (CLO). CLO, like its fossil counterpart, has to potential to serve as the sole feedstock for the whole US$ 5 trillion petrochemical industry.
Vertoro was founded in 2017 and received seed funding in early 2018. By late 2018, it raised over $ 700K in equity and non-dilutives. It will pilot its technology at a barrel per day by mid-2019 in both the US and the Netherlands.

There are tens of thousands of patients with nystagmus in Europe. Seven percent of children and four percent of the total adult population suffer from strabismus. The treatment of nystagmus and strabismus is currently still performed using surgical procedures, after which the nystagmus often returns within 12 months post successful surgery.
VideoOculograph allows solving this problem simply by using light treatment avoiding any surgical risks or long rehabilitation periods. It’s the first complex eye tracking solution using computer vision and machine learning for accurate contactless diagnostics of several diseases (neurological disorders, inner ear illnesses, vision diseases etc.) by spontaneous eye movement and pupil reaction and noninvasive treatment of eye pathologies.
VideoOculograph’s technology was scientifically validated during trials in partnership with leading clinics including the Fedorov network medical clinic ISTC (Eye microsurgery), with more than 300 successfully treated patients with nystagmus as a result.
Now it became possible to conduct diagnostics for patients from every corner of the world. Everything takes place through their interactive platform where they monitor an eye video created with a min 120 fps camera and the patient will receive the protocol with their diagnostic data.
Their revolutionary technology will forever change the way we used to conduct vision diagnostics and treatment.
