Things I Believe
I remember a series of stories on National Public Radio called This I Believe. I loved hearing a unique point of views, and thought I would share some of my own. These are the things I believe:
I believe that the United States of America is still the greatest country in the world, even as I also believe that our current President is unworthy of his title.
I believe that the crunch of a great apple you bite into is one of the best sounds in the world — although it trails behind the burbling laughter of babies, summer thunderstorms, and a crackling fire in the fireplace.
I believe all human beings on this planet are helped by awe — that nature can save our lives and help our sanity, if we let it.
I believe we are all capable of great good, of sacrificing ourselves for others, of doing the right thing no matter how difficult it may be.
I believe we are also all capable of cruelty, petty spite, hatred, and prejudice.
I believe that love is more powerful than hate, but it is apathy that is the opposite of love, not hatred. Elie Wiesel said it first.
I believe that the flag of our country is a powerful symbol, but the Constitution is its true heart, soul & all other organs.
I believe in the restorative power of a slow-cooked meal made with love and care — both in the preparation of the meal and in the eating of the meal.
I believe in saying “please” and “thank you,” and remembering the names of the restaurant waitstaff.
I believe in being kind, especially to those smaller and weaker than I am.
I believe that dogs are our best and most loyal of friends, but if you can’t have a dog, cats can give us just as much comfort, without the barking and with purring.
I believe that we need to stay busy, with our minds as well as our bodies, if we are to survive to healthy old age.
I believe that a college education is there, so we can elevate Art and Beauty to capital letters — but if you don’t go to college, you can do as well reading good books, especially the classics.
I believe that that making lists of “things I believe in” is one way to write a pretty good blog. I double-dog dare you to write your own.
