Life seems like an infinite number of nows in sequence. But it is not infinite. Just as it can be splendid, painful or pleasurable, it can also end any moment. Every now amounts to who you become. And you’re lucky to experience every single one.
Would you do what you’re doing if you knew this was one of your last?
There is now little question that how one uses one’s attention moment to moment, largely determines what kind of person one becomes. Our minds and lives are largely shaped by how we use them.
— Sam Harris
Your attention is powerful. It shapes the person you become. It can work for you, or it can work for someone else.
Being aware of our attention at this level is at least challenging. In an epidemic of constant busyness, endless to-do lists and infinite notifications from all of our devices it is even more difficult. It becomes strange for one to try to be mindful, to look for ways to minimize distractions.
Distractions are everywhere. All of your messaging apps, all of your news and media sites. Your phone. E-mail. Meetings. Those are all portals for other peoples agenda for your time.
If you’re feeling stressed, maybe you think you’re not accomplishing enough. This perspective might change your state of mind.
It is always now.
Own this moment. Put the phone away.
