C’mon people, we all know these three truths. Or we should. I think though, somewhere along the way, we forget how important they are.
1. First big truth
Almost any kid can tell you, Play Is Necessary
When was the last time you let go and had fun? And didn’t care who might have been watching?
I don’t mean the, “Oh, I went for a long walk and communed with nature” moments, or “I practised the piano for hours, lost in the intricacies of this piece” or “I explored a creative side of myself in a different medium — I wrote a poem, painted a picture.”
All of those are wonderful, affirming, life-sustaining, creativity-expanding activities. And they can be a lot of fun. And rewarding. And they will pay dividends in your mental health and energy.
I love nothing better than digging the bones of a piece of music. Uncovering its heart. Finding the best phrasing, learning which notes to lean into a bit. And I’ll spend hours working to get the sound just right, so it flows…
