Recently, I shared an article, The Self-Help Trap: Have We Got Passion and Purpose All Wrong?

The response was overwhelmingly positive, with most readers agreeing and one lady responding…

“Love it! It makes me think about what the industry of self-help is doing…”

After patting myself on the back, looking in the mirror, and winking “legend”, I proceeded to read the remainder of her message.

She went on to ask…

“Do you think “influencers” or “coaches” are aware that instead of helping others, they’re getting them to feel even more miserable?

Probably the question is: Do they really care?

The more they create depressed people, the more they will have work…at least this is for “coaches” that don’t give a fuck about helping others.”

Here’s my answer:

Yes and No…

I don’t believe any individual is intentionally creating depressed people, but I do believe the industry plays a role in the rising numbers struggling with their mental health.

I think the coaching industry, by its very nature, attracts both narcissists and empaths — two extreme ends of the spectrum, both of which tend to struggle emotionally for different reasons…
