VMWorld 2021 —Invites you to embark on an Application Modernization journey

Application Modernization is one of the buzz words in the IT space now a days. Enterprises are looking at ways to move away from the legacy and embracing the newer ways of developing and deploying applications to go faster and forever, but securely.

VMWare has a suite of products under the Tanzu umbrella that helps businesses to realise their application modernisation goals. Tanzu suite not only eases out the pain of developers but also helps the operators to manage their environments and maintain the applications will less toil. Tanzu comes in several editions, from basic to advanced, which helps in meeting the customer at their current stage and maturity on the application modernisation journey.

Let us look at some of the interesting sessions in VMWorld 2021 which will provide insights into several aspects Tanzu and Application Modernization in general:

Sessions

1. Cloud Infrastructure Transformation with VMware Tanzu Basic and Tanzu Standard session would cover the need of a newbie to Tanzu world. It is a level 100 session starting right from putting the platform together to extending it across multiple clouds with Tanzu Standard.
2. Explore New VMware Tanzu Frontiers is a session for users looking forward to be a part of Tanzu and expand its horizons. Early adopters will appreciate this session as it introduces new Tanzu for smaller environments.
3. Introducing Cloud Native Runtimes for VMware Tanzu is a session for beginners that will introduce Knative and how serverless environment boosts productivity. This session will also introduce users to even driven architectures. It’s a level 100 session so prior knowledge is not a must.
4. Intro to VMware Tanzu Advanced: Speed the Delivery of Modern Apps at Scale is an entry level session for all developers who would like to understand how Tanzu can shield them from some of the pain points around productivity. It is also a handy session for all security enthusiasts to understand how to bake in security using DevSecOps rather than considering it as an afterthought.
5. Running Microservices With Tanzu Data Services at Scale on Kubernetes is a session that brings Tanzu to the IoT world. With massive number of devices come the challenges of scalability, reliability and security. This session will also introduce Tanzu Gemfire and Tanzu RabbitMQ and how they can be used to build a reliable application using Spring Cloud.

Hands on Labs

1. VMware Tanzu Kubernetes Grid is a recommended hands on lab for users who are new to the containerisation world. This lab users will introduced to Kubernetes and will be able to see how to deploy containerised applications and scale them. This complements very well with Session #1.
2. VMware Tanzu Standard — Simplify Kubernetes Across Clouds is another recommended hands on lab for basic level users who want to get a first hand experience on Tanzu Standard and how it can be used to centrally manage clusters across multiple clouds
3. Introduction to Tanzu Advanced for Developers is one of the must attend workshop for all application developers. This will not only provide information on how Tanzu Advanced makes the life of application developers simple but also how they can leverage pre built applications from Tanzu Application Catalogue. This is a level 200 lab and complements Session #4.

AMA With Experts

These AMA sessions provide advanced users with an opportunity to ask questions that would help them resolve any issues that they would have experienced during their interaction with Tanzu products.

1. VMware Tanzu Basic and VMware Tanzu Standard

3. VMware Tanzu Application Service
4. VMware Tanzu Observability by Wavefront

Spring

It is difficult (if not impossible) to talk about application modernization and not touch the spring ecosystem at all. Spring is one of the favourite frameworks among the developers developing microservices and cloud native applications. There are a few noteworthy sessions for the Spring fans to look out for:

1. Accelerate Java Application Modernization with Azure Spring Cloud and Accelerate Spring Apps to Cloud: Azure Spring Cloud Customer Discussion introduce Azure Spring cloud (developed jointly by Microsoft and VMware) to the developers and how they can leverage it to manage and maintain Spring Cloud infrastructure.
2. Building Native Spring Microservices on Kubernetes: Deep Dive is a technical deep dive session on creating spring based microservices and running them on Kubernetes. This session with touch base on many advanced topics including but not limited to native images, just in time compilation etc. It is a recommended session for techies (level 300) who want to expand on their knowledge of microservice development on Kubernetes.

This is by far not an exhaustive list but a selected few sessions that I would like to attend and basis my experience in application modernisation would recommend to any fellow colleagues who are already into application modernization or would like to take it up.
