This post is for all sports science nerds out there who want to learn more about how their muscles work when cycling or running in order to improve their performance.

In this post, I will give you a broad understanding of skeletal muscles. We will look at their structure, we will study muscle contractions with a specific focus on cycling and running and dive deep into the relationship between muscle force and muscle length or movement velocity, finally deriving the optimal cycling cadence.

Are you hooked yet? Bear with me.

Skeletal Muscle Structure

In order to understand how muscles move our body, we first need to have a good understanding of their structure. In the following few paragraphs, I will dive into how muscles look like microscopically and what they consist of.
