A freelancer must have clients to be successful. Yet few guides talk about the type of clients you should aim to snag.

I believe this is an aspect that goes unnecessarily forgotten. When you’ve been in this business for long enough you start to realise not all clients were created equal.

Startups are a type of client I’m extremely wary of working with as they come with unique challenges you won’t find elsewhere.

That doesn’t mean you should never work with them, but you certainly need to put some extra precautions in place.

Startups are Often Inexperienced

Those behind startups, are naturally, trying to juggle multiple tasks at once. They’re often entrepreneurs who are new to the world of running their own businesses.

That also means they’re new to working with freelancers.

A lack of experience means they may have issues communicating, putting forth realistic expectations, and just understanding the way the process works. All this combined can create real headaches for freelancers.

The fallout from a lack of experience can cause projects to drag on and lead to a lot of unprofessional behaviour from their side.
