Economic issues in the US are always at the forefront of people’s minds. You hear politicians spew their bile before they return home to their mansions. Whether it’s in Europe or North America, the same boring narrative is wheeled out around the time of an election.

We have reached that time. The developed world is preparing to hold its breath again as we roll towards 2020.

So now poor people get to be lectured by rich people about why they’re on your side and why everything is going to change. That is until January 2021 when we repeat the same cycle.

The questions have to be asked, why in the richest country in the world are people so poor? Why isn’t the quality of life also the highest in the world? And why is it not getting any better?

The Rich and the Poor

California is America’s richest state by some margin. In the two decades up to 2017, GDP grew by an enormous 78%. From a state that was already rich, these are massive, almost unprecedented numbers.

Yet 56% of the population of California lives below the poverty line, according to the California Budget and Policy Center.

It’s a scandal. And the sad thing is nobody is really doing anything about it…
