Why and How Ambiance Influences Productivity

Productivity is important for any startup, because as you know it, time is money. If your startup is not productive, you’re losing a lot, and that is the last thing you want to happen. Most startups in the 21st century know that they have to keep their employees happy. However, the mistake they make is focusing on just the monetary part, and not the emotional part.

According to an article published on the Harvard Business Review, the emotions of employees are ‘clues’ to what motivates them. Motivation is the most essential factor that drives a startup, especially when it comes to human resources.

I have witnessed the managers in startups try to motivate the employees by organizing seminars, events or even throwing parties. However, most of them fail to pay attention to one simple aspect — the workplace.

With the generation of the working population changing, their likes and dislikes keep changing too. For a startup, it is easy to modify the workplace according to employees’ preferences. This could contribute to better emotional intelligence, helping you get the best of your employees.

If your startup’s employees are mostly millennials, here’s some good news: it’s not that difficult to please them. They like simple things.

Say goodbye to those old, crappy cubicles and modular furniture you end up paying a lot for. Millennials prefer open work spaces and minimalist environments. Sometimes, a little music can help set the ambiance, if your work space could allow that. Warm lights and plants could also increase the aspects of the environment.

Having a break room is very important, if you don’t have one. There are also other simple ‘workplace fixes’ that could create a better environment, if you are not planning on revamping your entire office.

However, this is just the icing on the cake. The ambiance of your work space does not only depend on how it looks, but also how it feels. Promotion of communication between employees, elimination of hierarchy and focusing more on roles, creating less of a corporate-like environment and more of a family-like environment encourages better employee engagement.

In Forbes’ list of Elements of a Highly Productive Office, ergonomics plays a dominant role. It makes your employees feel more comfortable. For example, something like a simple height-adjustable stand up desk could make your employees productive and happier.

Better chairs, monitors and less-noisy keyboards make a big difference in the ambiance too. Also, they improve ergonomics. Good ergonomics reduces fatigue and eventually increases the productivity of the employees. It might seem like an extra investment, but in the end, nothing pays you better.

Psychologists believe that ambiance has a direct effect on the moods of a person. A good ambiance keeps your employees happier, which eventually keeps them motivated.

Paying special attention to the needs of individual employees is essential in today’s workplace. If you do that, you will end up keeping them happy and eventually get the best out of them.

There are also other initiatives that could be undertaken to increase the happiness levels in the workplace. It takes a little extra effort to create the best ambiance, and timely changes should be encouraged. In the end, it will prove to be a better turnover for the startup as a whole.
