Why I Stopped Being a Digital Nomad

--

I was a “Digital Nomad” in the most incredible locations for years. But I can’t stand the lifestyle anymore.

Here’s the experiences that led me to stop being a digital nomad.

Unwelcome Gentrification

Locals are understandably pissed off.

Digital Nomads are often better paid than the locals who live there, this has led to gentrification and housing crises in digital nomad hotspots around the world.

I spent years studying Spanish to integrate with the locals. But, even after trying to assimilate I was still told to “go home”, to “fuck off” and that I’m a “modern day coloniser”.

I recognise my privilege to be able to travel around the world and to work wherever I choose, but I don’t think that I’m at fault for that. I have nothing but respect for the locals that live there.

Did I feel guilty though? Yeah.

It doesn’t matter how beautiful the beaches are if everyone on the beach hates you.

It felt lonely.
