What is news in times of social media?

We, humans, have a deep need for truth and authenticity, but the truth seems to have gone fishing in this age of information overload. The old fact-checking newspaper institutes are turning into social media channels themselves, driven by the economy of attention that is monetizing our screentime. This development has left us with ample trust in digital news outlets, publication channels and traditional press. Where will this devaluation of Truth lead to? Can the Blockchain help to bring trusted news back in this desert of fakeness? Or is it time to conserve fact-checked news and in-depth articles in the museum of antique means of communication.

Likes as a system of validation

The rise of Facebook, Twitter and other social media ignited the acceleration of access to information. The mother of this development is the Internet itself, referred to as the revolution of information.

The promise that the world would become our oyster is made true, although someday we might find out that social media is only a hollow marketing shell and the Oyster was never there.

Nevertheless, the Internet upgraded our attention to a very valuable and scarce product. Social media platforms figured this out…
