The United States left the joint comprehensive plan of action, commonly referred to as the Iran nuclear deal. Despite the International atomic energy agency validating its adherence to all the stipulations of the agreement with Russia, China, the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Germany. In other words, Iran stopped building nuclear weapons in exchange for the removal of sanctions. This was confirmed several times by the independent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). As such, the U.S. decision to unilaterally withdraw from the agreement has caused consternation amongst Western members as Iran is now closer to breach previous limits on uranium enrichment and heavy water for nuclear reactors.

The U.S. has weaponized sanctions

Even though Western allies haven’t openly criticized the U.S.’s approach, little has been done to implement Instex, the European Union’s special purpose vehicle. The U.S. will prevent companies from doing business with Iran from accessing the international trading and financial system. In other words, it has weaponized its economic might and used Europe as leverage as it plans its war against Iran. The European Union, despite its best efforts, can do little. The unilateral withdrawal of the U.S. from the Iran nuclear deal is counterproductive as other signatories will be forced to violate a U.N resolution that calls for…
