Why You Shouldn't Start A Blog In 2018 [Or Ever…]

This article will ruffle a few feathers…

This article is going to ruffle a few feathers…

But I feel compelled to write it.

Too often do I see writers on the internet and on sites like Medium and Quora come to the forefront of everyone's screens. They come in, guns-a-blazing and light up the airwaves. They're all gung-ho about preaching their expertise on a given subject.

  • They offer up research.
  • They tell of personal experience.
  • They declare themselves arbiter of all information.

And then they vanish into the dark deep pits of the silent corners of the web.

Never to be found or heard of again.

I think to myself,

The answer…

They shouldn't have started a blog in the first place — they don't have what it takes to be successful in this industry.

And rightfully so. This industry is fucking tough. Whether it be the mental and intellectual strain one experiences, the battle with the fraud-complex, or just lack of priority to create — this game can easily burn you out and kick you to the curb.

What is to follow below are the main arguments why you shouldn't start a blog in 2018…

You don't have the stamina for the marathon ahead

Blogging isn't a short game to be played.

I know, I know…

There are hundreds if not thousands of people that are promising courses, tricks, hacks and secrete strategies that will help you become a viral success overnight.

I truly think that blogging is a community that wants to foster something positive for the people involved. The majority of these courses/products are going to be along that wavelength.

However, I also believe that you are lying to yourself if you think that you are going to start up a blog, write a few articles, and start a monetization machine out of it over the span of a few months.

It took me a tremendous amount of time to achieve what I have achieved:

I don't bring all of this up to boast…

In fact, everything listed above took me over two years to accumulate (and in my eyes it's still really nothing).

Blogging is a marathon. It takes at least one year to improve your writing enough so you can actually put out content. On top of that, no one knows about you or trusts you in the beginning. Why would they care about what a random person who

They don't… until you build trust.

Building that trust takes time — again, sometimes years.

You won't write about what the market wants

If you're thinking about blogging or have already started blogging, chances are you have written about your interests.

Maybe you've written an article or two about some exhilarating thoughts that have been going on in your head.

Maybe you've written about an ideal view about what the world should be.

I went down that road…

My first blog — started over two years ago (I hate talking about it sometimes… so embarrassing: Wheresthefidelity.com) was all over the place. There was no rhyme or reason to what was being written.

I had the philosophy that plague many failed bloggers:

If I build it, they will come…

I hate saying it, just because you your ideas and thoughts are great, doesn't make it so.

I always get a little kickback when I say this — writers and bloggers must also be great marketers.

For some reason, for writers, the idea of mixing art with business yields that sour, uncomfortable feeling.

If you started or want to start your blog for the sole purpose of having it be like an online journal and you don't care about the views or eventually turning it into a money-making machine, then disregard everything I'm saying.

Find the meeting point of your interests as well as the market's

On the flip side, if you want to get into this game because you're done with the rigmarole of your 9–5 job and want to write about something that interests you while simultaneously educating the masses and turning a profit, you have to write about something that the market wants.

I'm not going to go into it in depth listing out what niches in the marketplace are both popular and profitable but there are so many resources one can turn to. Like this one for example:

It's imperative that you write about something that is interesting enough for you to write about over the long haul and also is something that people are looking for in order to solve the problems they're dealing with.

You won't make the necessary investments

There's the common misnomer that seems to be circling around to all the writers and bloggers out there.

That every blogger that is successful now was gifted as an excellent writer from the beginning.

Great writers and bloggers aren't merely talented in what they do (though some are more gifted than others) — great writers and bloggers understand that they are going to need to invest in themselves in order to get better.

  • Great bloggers invest in their copywriting skills.
  • Great bloggers invest in their online marketing strategy.
  • Great bloggers invest in their education of the industry.

Most people see the price tags associated with these investments. Some of the investments range from a few dollars, others a few hundred dollars and some even a few thousand dollars. The legendary Seth Godin offers his altMBA for a whopping $3000.

But a lot of these education courses are filled with rich, life transforming material.

I know I've spent well over $1000 on multiple courses that range from blogging to copywriting and have come out both a better blogger as a result of it as well as a better man.

It's about priority of investment…

Of course I know there are scores of people reading this section rolling their eyes.

Their cynicism is getting the better of them — they either believe they don't need the education and they'll be able to scam this mountain themselves, or they believe that there's no value in any of the education.

Again —if you fall into this category, there's another reason why you shouldn't start a blog.

You aren't willing to make the necessary sacrifices

I know how you've been picturing the future of your successful blogging career:

I've had that vision too.

Shit…I'm already living a little bit of it.

No one tells you what you have to in order to get all of that, however.

Sure, I've already outlined some of the necessary sacrifices that will need to be made — financial, and strategic.

The personal and spiritual sacrifices will surely ween out all of the other blog-warriors that might remain up until this point.

When you go out on your own — your entrepreneurial endeavor — gone are the days of the comfortable paycheck.

You control your own destiny.

Gone are the days of going out with your friends on a leisurely Saturday booze-cruise. You have work to do.

Gone are the days of sleeping in. You need to get up early so you can get in your necessary writing ritual before the other responsibilities of the day arise.

Writing and blogging for a career can be fucking lonely.

That alone is enough to turn people away.

I can't count the amount of times I've had to say "no" to the immediate gratification around me. Hell, even in saying "no," I often wasn't rewarded right away by something meaningful with this hustle.

In accordance with the marathon of this gig illustrated above, sometimes you make all of these sacrifices and for what? You'll go months on end with what seems like no progress.

Are you really ready for a life like that?

There you have it…

The biggest reasons you shouldn't start a blog.

To sum it all up — You shouldn't start a blog because most of you reading this will surely fail, and fail miserably.

I didn't write this post for the majority of people though.

I wrote this blog for .

I wrote this blog for the person reading this who has been saying in their head over and over

"Fuck you, Jon. I do have what it takes and I'll show you."

If that thought, or something like it, has been circling in your head, I applaud you.

If you know — you know…

If you're the person who is ready for the long haul, you're ready to check your ego and write about what the market wants, you're ready to sacrifice what is needed in order to reach the heights others won't reach, bravo — this article is for you.

And rightfully so.

Because now the world needs that voice more than ever. With the economy changing and rhetoric in along the airwaves in such a state of flux and turmoil, you're needed more than ever.

If you're the type of person who push forward, then press on. The world will thank you in ways you couldn't imagine.
