I’m at the mercy of the pen-name game
For any writer, choosing a pen name is a stressful task. It becomes even more daunting when you no longer want to use the one you initially chose.
A divorce will do that to you.
Personal issues aside, picking a pen name defines who you are as a writer. You can cultivate an air of mystery, like J.K. Rowling when she first published Harry Potter, or you can be who your name suggests, like Jane Austen.
I used to think either option was acceptable. But as someone now grappling with the repercussions of using my real name, I no longer have such a straightforward opinion.
I’ve spent weeks undoing the decision to use my actual name. As I start rebuilding my life, I’m facing countless challenges because of it.
Regret is coming in thick and fast.
Emotional Identity
I used to believe my writing life was separate from my personal life. I assumed I could publish books, share articles, and engage with readers without it affecting my day-to-day reality.
