We all have different ways to assess our career satisfaction, and for the majority of people, it is not just one thing that matters.

There are many variables, and probably each of them has a different weight of importance for us. Some people are more money driven whereas others are more mission/purpose driven — but regardless, all the factors play some role for us

My own desires have fluctuated over the years but, generally, I had previously always considered that the overriding importance was the mission/purpose, then things like money and flexibility.

Everyone is different, and we change over time in what is most important for our circumstances.

Underestimated Factor

I am constantly evaluating what makes me happy in life and work. Over the past couple of years, I have come to the realization myself and observing people, that there is a factor even more important than the traditional considerations of purpose, money, perks, and flexibility.

It is an often overlooked but critical element that can make or break your happiness….the People you work with.

I am not just referring to your boss or manager (which are also important factors) but all the people you interact with on a daily basis, the people ‘in the trenches’ with you.

We spend the majority of the time we are awake at work, so your experience during those hours will massively impact your emotions.

You can have a meaningful job and be well paid, but if you have no quality human connection, support, friendships or socializing — you will not be satisfied for long.

Life is about Relationships

Personal Relationships are the most important currency there is, it is proven to improve your health and happiness. There is a feeling of safety/security amongst likeminded people and importantly a counterpart to chat (gossip) and share thoughts, whims, and emotions.

Great teammates can be a cheerleader, a shoulder to cry on and a ‘sounding board’ when dealing with work and personal challenges.

I think for most people it takes a while to see this clearly as we are blinded by the inspirational messages of what we should be doing and what we should value most.

It does not mean I will always agree or see ‘eye to eye’ with everyone at work and there are many factors that I need/value to feel content in my career.
But spending my working hours with people I like and respect is critical to my happiness.
