Swoop Search aspires to make search a creative adventure. Our users are experts in health care, national security, oil and gas, retail, finance, and many others. They possess incredible imagination, intuition, and brilliance. We fundamentally believe that these talents should be integral to retrieving information that is relevant to each special and unique user. Design is the medium in which we can most intimately connect with our users and enable their creativity.
A System of Contradiction
Creativity and efficiency sometimes stand at a contradiction. Maximizing creativity can slow development; however, constraining creativity can hinder an idea from developing fully. Striking the balance between the two means subtly blending creativity with structure. As a designer at Swoop Search, you will join a design effort with one resolute philosophy:
Swoop is the user’s system. Creativity means making a choice. Choice means variability. We believe it’s unlikely to understand the range of a user’s creative expression. Instead,we strive to use design to help frame and inform the next creative choice.
The Role and Process
Communication is at the center of everything you will do. You can be the greatest artist or designer in the world, but if you fail to listen to users and communicate with the team, you will fall short of contributing effectively.
You should feel comfortable working with engineers to understand the critical components of both the front and back ends. You should use that conversation to understand how those components could be leveraged to explore for information. You will then lead the charge of bringing the designs and interactions to life.
Skills We Look For
Swoop designers are given the freedom and opportunity to work across a spectrum of roles, from artist, to user researcher, to interaction designer. You should feel comfortable with tools like Illustrator or Sketch, prototyping interfaces, experimenting with color and typography, and talking with users about your assumptions and ideas. You will be working in harmony with the front end engineers to implement your designs responsively and beautifully. Our designs should be pixel perfect, and our user’s experience intuitive, joyful, and highly effective.
