The Sybarite Newsletter: Jealousy
Please enjoy these stories while I die.
Greetings, Sybarites. I am currently dying of some sort of respiratory disease so I am going to keep this short. (Not COVID, although I don’t know why I’m compelled to announce that?)
Sometimes other people write stories that are so good they make me jealous, but it’s not quite pure jealousy because I’m also so grateful that I get to read them. Jealousy - gratitude = what? Not sure, but I do think it’s one of those 193848238 feelings that has no name.
I feel that way about this story by D. A. Langley who writes about aging parents, parenting, and the natural world in a way that is so good I kept muttering to myself “wow” while reading it, wondering why I couldn’t write something so beautiful. It’s gorgeous and deep and sad and happy all at the same time.
And although it’s not in Sybarite, everyone should read this series “Trashley” by Lauren Reeves. I binge-read it this week while in bed dying/coughing/revising my will. It’s fifty-one glorious parts of the most bonkers catfishing story I may have ever read or heard about, and this is from someone who listened to the Dirty John and Sweet Bobby podcasts straight through, no breaks. Lauren’s incredible recall for details is likely a testament to her morning journaling habit, which also made me jealous. (Why don’t I do that instead of clicking around on X, Facebook, Instagram and online chess every morning over coffee?).
You can thank me later for both recommendations if I live.
