Every 40 seconds someone dies as a result of suicide, that adds up to about 800,000 people every year (WHO). These numbers have raised in the last two decades making it the second leading cause of death. It is also one of the only causes of death is that that is constantly rising. Some major causes of this are PTSD, the higher expectation of students and the need for a higher education while paying a fortune for it. Suicide rates begin to spike for ages 15–24 then hits the highest from ages 45–54 (Suicide Statistics).

The reasons why people develop mental illness isn’t entirely clear its suspected that it has to do with the environment, biology and psychological aspects (Causes of Mental Illnesses). Some studies have shown that mental illness can be linked to abnormally functioning nerve cells. That is why medications can help some people with depression and anxiety. Other things such as damage to a baby’s brain when its first born, genetics, and infections can play a role. Psychological factors can be attributed to tram as a child and also neglect. Environmental factors include changing jobs or schools, parents getting divorced and substance abuse. Many people develop mental illness for all different reasons and there hasn't really been enough research to determine exactly why it happens to those people and not others.
