Projekt Ilaiyaraaja Season III — 108/365 — Poo Poo Poo

Some of my non-Tamil friends might laugh at the title of the song, but Poo in Tamil means flower — also, in literature, a flower is used as a metaphor for women.

Today is Director Bharathiraja’s birthday and Bharathiraja is a close friend of Ilaiyaraaja and a frequent collaborator. It’s actually difficult to find an unnoticed song from their collaboration list because every song is a gem and a massive hit. But their second-last movie together (they parted after that due to differences mainly fueled by Bharathiraja’s friendship with Vairamuthu), Pudhu Nellu Pudhu Nathu had this beautiful song that usually not spoken about.

The flute work of Napoleon (Arun Mozhi) in this song is quite notable because Ilaiyaraaja has conceived it as a flute based song (I can identify as much three different flutes in the song). Gangai Amaren’s lyrics is equally notable as every line in the Pallavi starts with Poo Poo Poo and the Charanams are beautifully written.
